Project overview

The local gas utility extended a new main to the campus and set meters at each building. SIS installed the underground service laterals from the new main, completed meter and regulator work, made the final building connections and converted every piece of fuel-fired equipment from propane to natural gas.

Scope of work

  • Removal of existing underground and exposed propane piping
  • Nitrogen purge of abandoned underground piping
  • Directional-bored laterals from the new main to each building
  • Gas meters, regulators and final service connections
  • Conversion of air handlers, heating units and boilers
  • Conversion of water heaters and kitchen equipment
  • Testing and adjustment of all equipment and regulators

Challenges and how we solved them

CHALLENGE

Boring under roads, pavement and live utilities

SOLUTION

Close coordination with local utility locate services before and during directional boring across the campus.

CHALLENGE

Working to the gas utility's schedule

SOLUTION

Ongoing communication with the utility to time the final tie-ins to the new main.

CHALLENGE

Keeping an operating campus warm

SOLUTION

Work was scheduled for summer, and interior conversions ran concurrently with exterior utility work to compress the schedule.

RESULT

Substantially complete four months ahead of schedule and before the heating season.
